Burley II V Leeds Corinthians II
8th September 2007.
A fine sunny day had set in for the Burley boys to take on there city rivals. The ground was hard the sun was beating down and the all thirty men on the field were in the mood to play.
Burley lost the toss and Corinthians choose to play up the hill for the first half. The game started well with big hit after big hit from all sides. Burley new comers Ian Anderson, Daz Grey and Elliot Viles were all putting themselves about trying to make a good impression on the club.
Ten minutes in Corinthians broke the line and although Burley gave good chase they could not quite keep up with the pace from the Corinthians winger. As a result he touched down under the sticks and left an easy conversion for the Corinthians number nine.
Burley's number ten Tim Betts kick off sending the ball down field to find an awesome bounce giving a line out deep into the Corinthians half. The ball was stolen from Burleys front jumper Rob Stone, this then resulted in 30 grown men waving hand bags at each other.
At half time the visitors were leading 20 points to nil. Some good strong words of encouragement from skipper Jim Griffin resulted in Burley scoring their only try of the game but it being by far the best of the day from both teams. Ian Anderson took the ball up and set it on the floor for Burley to form a rock solid ruck. Tom Hodges took control handing off and spinning out of two different tackles, off loading to open side flanker Ben Lazenby, who then passed on to Daz Grey allowing him to score under the sticks after a 20 yard sprint.
A good day was had by all and the game was played in good spirits. There were no red or yellow cards as both skippers controlled the team well when instructed by the official Mr. Keith Jones.
The game finished up 7-33 to the visitors.
