Burley V Old Modernians

3rd November 2007.
Burley in another away League game traveled the short distance to play mid table opponents Old Modernians. Welcoming back recently married V/Capt. No8 James Palfrey-Smith, Centre Henry Bisson, Fly Half Richie Parrish and Second Row George Curtis, Burley also had veteran Paul Wheeler at Full Back. Mods who won the toss and chose to play with the slope were soon into their stride. Playing an expansive game they caused Burley many problems and only desperate defence kept them out. Pressure finally told and from a miskick by Scrum Half Mark Walton their lively Centre scored out wide. After 30mins a further try was scored in the corner after a series of drives in the visitors 22. This was to be Mods final points of the game. Burley were gradually getting into the game and a good surging drive by Milosz took Burley within 10m of the Mods line, only to lose possession and finish back in their own 22. Burley attacked up the slope and were awarded a penalty, slotted over by Parrish. At 10-3 at Half Time and now playing down the slope Burley had absorbed all the Mods pressure and were only a try and conversion adrift. A great break by Bisson came to nothing the final pass going to ground. Another battering run by Skipper Jamie Ferguson, (more of these please) with support either side of him fizzled out when the wrong option was taken. Now on top Burley were awarded another penalty, converted by Parrish. Mods had a few excursions into the Burley half but were unable to add to their score. At 10-6 Burley introduced Richie Christie, Mike Taylor and Alan Henderson for George Curtis, Karl Hayward and Injured Prop Paul Pinder and with a final effort were going for the win. Unfortunately with Burley attacking time ran out much to the relief of a well drilled and lively Mods. A good Burley performance, but another defeat. A win is not far away
