Burley V Old Otliensians
20th October 2007.
Burley where back to League action entertaining Old Otliensians, who along with Bramley Phoenix and Hessle are among the favorites for promotion from Yorkshire 4.
After last weeks Cup success against Birkenhead based Parkonians, Burley where missing Wing Neil Robinson, Scrum Half Mark Walton, Prop Paul Pinder, No8 James Palfrey-Smith, and 2nd Rowers George Curtis and Milosz leaving resources stretched to the limit.
Starting up the slope Otliensians where on the board after 10minutes, following a driving maul from a 15m lineout, which Burley where unable to defend.
The home side where competing well in the scrums, the front row of Jamie Ferguson, Sean Robertson and James Farrad certainly equaling their heavier opponents. The lineout's were the problem area, with no regular jumper possession was in short supply.
A further unconverted try by the visitors made the Half Time score 10-0.
Any hope of a second half revival soon evaporated with the loss through injury of Second Row pair Alex Short and Eddie Sommerville.
Four converted tries at regular intervals put the game beyond doubt. One particular score showed why games are lost.
From a poor kick off, a lack of enthusiasm in the chase saw the Otley 2nd Row collect on his 22, stroll through the Burley defence, chip ahead, re-gather, and score under the posts.
A great try if you're from Otley, not so good if from Burley.
As the game drew to a close Burley desperate for some inspiration had Captain Jamie Ferguson Yellow Carded.
With the last play of the game Centre Andy Bissett intercepted to score a consolation try under the posts, Richie Parrish converting.
Good performances by veteran Scrum Half Paul Wheeler and MOM Flanker Dan Johnson.
A game to forget, but be rest assured better days will follow.
